Library Of Congress Music Classification System

Sibley Music Library's score and book collections are organized according to the Library of Congress Music Classification System. This library guide will provide a general outline of the M, ML, and MT schemes (along with the classifications of non-music items in the library). In addition, it will guide you to the specific locations where these classed materials are shelved.

The three LC Music classifications are:

M: music scores

ML: literature on music

MT: musical instruction and study (scores or books)

In addition, Sibley holds a small but significant collection of items that have Classification letters not beginning with M.

Click on the above tabs of each for details.

For call numbers of specific instruments or groups of instruments, please see the library guide devoted to that instrument or subject.
